One of the “gifts of this pandemic is quiet. The world has grown much more quiet. So many of the noises we never heard because they were just part of the background melted away when air traffic slowed down, for example. Some of the trucks and trains changed their routes. In many neighborhoods like mine a hallmark of this international pandemic has been a deeper silence. Once things got quiet birds found their voices and people everywhere started to hear the sounds of nature more acutely.
After eight months of this “new normal” one of the things I cherish is the bird life in my backyard, the stillness in the evening. The quiet is so soothing throughout the day that I find it suits me better than the noisy world we left behind.
In the quiet we hear the sound of nature, but we also hear our own thoughts, and sense the pulse of God.
