Interesting in making a one-time pledge?

Dear Members and Friends of Pilgrim Church,

Haven’t the past six months felt as though we’re each in an Ark of Isolation, buffeted and battered by the storm of COVID, with lightning flashes and rolling thunder of civil unrest and extreme weather?

Like Noah at sea in his Ark, we don’t see the end of the storm.  Like Noah, we’ve had to trust that God holds us dear and cares for us in time of trouble.

Our Church and our Church family have been among God’s gifts to help sustain us – our shelter in a time of storm.  Through internet connection we shared Sunday and Wednesday Services, Virtual Coffee Hour, Bible Study, Small Group Pods, and other outlets for worship and fellowship.  We ran monthly book sales that raised money and wonderful community spirit, attracting dozens of shoppers and selling hundreds of books. We started PODS that sing to shut-ins. We created an ambitious online ministry that is reaching hundreds of viewers including new viewers in many other states.

We used this time to re-purpose the Youth Room to create a new space for the After School Program so children can meet safely and enjoy that resource while safely distanced.

Like Noah the faithful steward, our Church officers and staff continue to meet and attend to the needs of our membership and our community.  We have good news to report in that, thanks to the leadership of Trustees and staff,  we created a spending plan that kept us within the budget while relying much less on income from invested funds.

Our membership as well has responded with faithful generosity to support the work of the Church in these challenging times.  We not only maintained our pledged giving over the past six months, we are actually ten percent ahead of our pledge commitments compared to last year.  This continuing financial support has enabled us to weather the past six months without having to draw on the Church’s endowment fund, with the important result that we have avoided deficit spending in these dire times.

The Church and our Harwich community are not out of the rough and stormy seas yet, but now is the time when we must look ahead to the resumption and continuation of our Church life in the year 2021. As in years past, Stewardship Month is your opportunity to reflect on our common vision for Pilgrim Church and how we can bring it to fruition after the COVID waters recede.

When conditions allow, we look forward to bringing once again so much of who we are to this place we love. Meanwhile we can continue to bring our financial support, knowing that this aspect of our response to God's open invitation is critical to the day-to-day operation of our church:  supporting our missions; paying our bills; compensating our gifted staff, and generally making it possible for Pilgrim Church to exist in this material world.

Why is it so important to pledge?  Because the Church as a community, like all of us as individuals, must carefully manage its income and expenses.  The annual budget presented by the Trustees will show the expenses and the many worthy activities that our expenses support.  As for income, we have three sources:  1) your gifts, 2) fund-raising activities, and 3) withdrawals from the Church’s endowment.  The Church needs to know how much you plan to give, so that we can plan how much we need to raise from the other sources.

Last year, the Congregation responded in an outstandingly generous manner, with an increase in the average amount pledged from $1,850 to $2,280, and a total amount pledged of $145,909.  What a blessing this generosity has proven to be in these unanticipated hard times!  What a demonstration of abundant confidence in the future of Pilgrim Church!

Your support will enable our Church to emerge from the storm in good health and resume all the existing work and missions in our local community and beyond.

Sunday, November 1 is Commitment Sunday.  Please respond on or before that date

> by returning the enclosed pledge card with your pledge for 2021, OR

> by making your pledge using the prompts on the Church’s website right here.

May we, like Noah, continue to trust in God's loving care.  And may we give, as always, with faith in the future and love for our Church.

In gratitude,

Louise Moline, Harold Gabriel, Jody MacLeod
